Karpas — a natural gem of the TRNC

Karpas — a natural gem of the TRNC

The Karpas Peninsula is one of the island’s most picturesque spots, where unspoiled nature, wide sandy beaches, and peace and quiet remain intact. It is a popular destination for travelers seeking to experience wild nature and the true spirit of the Mediterranean. There is virtually no large-scale development here, so nature has retained its natural beauty: endless beaches, olive groves, and crystal-clear waters.

The beaches of Karpas

The region’s greatest treasure is its beaches. One of the most famous is Golden Beach — a coastline stretching for several kilometers, featuring soft golden sand and crystal-clear water. Because there are no large hotels or extensive amenities here, the beach retains a nearly untouched, wild appearance and is considered one of the most beautiful on the island.

The Karpas coastline is also known as a nesting site for sea turtles, which is why part of the area is protected by UNESCO.

In addition to Golden Beach, we recommend visiting:

  • Agios Philon beach;
  • small secluded coves along the coast;
  • beaches near the Monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle.

The monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle

This is one of the region’s main historical landmarks—the Monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle. It is located at the very tip of the peninsula and is considered an important place of pilgrimage.

According to legend, it was here that a spring of fresh water appeared, saving sailors during their voyage. Today, the monastery attracts tourists not only for its history but also for its incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea.

The church of Panagia Kanakaria

The Church of Panagia Kanakaria is one of the oldest and most significant Byzantine shrines in Northern Cyprus. It is believed that the church was built as early as the 6th century, and over the course of its centuries-long history, it has weathered Arab raids, earthquakes, and the passage of time.

The church is particularly famous for its unique Byzantine mosaics depicting Christ and the apostles, which are considered true masterpieces of early Christian art.

Today, Panagia Kanakaria remains one of Karpas’s main historical landmarks and an important part of the island’s cultural heritage.

The wild donkeys of Karpas

A unique attraction of the region is the famous Karpas donkeys. They roam freely along the roads and beaches of the peninsula and have long been a symbol of Karpas. Once upon a time, the donkeys lived with people, but over time they became wild and fully adapted to life in the wild.

The animals are friendly and used to tourists, but locals and environmentalists remind visitors that the donkeys remain part of the wild, so they should be treated with care and not fed harmful food.

The authentic atmosphere of Cyprus

Karpas is a place where you can experience Northern Cyprus as it was many years ago: with small traditional villages, family-run taverns, and a leisurely pace of life.

The peninsula will appeal to those looking for:

  • a getaway away from the tourist hustle and bustle;
  • beautiful views and hiking trails;
  • pristine beaches;
  • authentic Mediterranean culture.
